Gathering wild asparagus and healing herbs has been a centuries-old tradition on the island of Krk.

The sunny island of Krk is famous for its idyllic bathing coves and crystal-clear sea, but away from the coast lies a true paradise for nature lovers and gourmets! For thousands of years, the local people have made use of the rich variety of wild herbs and plants. Discover the fascinating world of traditional plant lore and bring a taste of untouched nature to your Croatian holiday.

An Ancient Tradition Lives On

The ethnobotanical knowledge of the island’s inhabitants has been passed down orally for generations. As early as 1900, the priest Ivan Žic from Vrbnik documented in detail how plants were used as food and medicine. Remarkably, recent studies have found that more than 75% of the wild herbs he described are still actively used on the island today! From wild asparagus (šparoge) to wild rocket (rikola), nature sets the table here.

The King of Spring: Wild Asparagus

In spring, locals head out into the countryside to gather wild asparagus (Asparagus acutifolius). Traditionally, it is prepared in local cuisine as a delicious “Fritaja” (scrambled eggs with asparagus). An absolute must for every food lover visiting Krk in spring!

Medicinal Plants & Forgotten Treasures

Besides asparagus, the young shoots of butcher’s broom (veprina) and wild clematis are also eaten on Krk. Numerous aromatic herbs are also used to prepare healthy, soothing natural teas that refresh body and mind after a long day at the beach.

Ingredients (serves 2):

  • 1 bunch of wild asparagus (only the tender tips that snap easily)
  • 4 fresh eggs
  • 1 small spring onion or a little garlic
  • High-quality olive oil from Krk
  • Salt & freshly ground pepper
  • Optional: some air-dried pršut (Croatian ham), cut into strips

Preparation:

Wash the asparagus tips and snap them into short pieces. Heat the olive oil in a pan and lightly sauté the onions (and the ham, if using). Add the wild asparagus and fry over medium heat for about 3-5 minutes until slightly tender. Whisk the eggs in a bowl, season with salt and pepper, then pour over the asparagus. Let the eggs set while stirring gently until creamy but not too dry. Serve hot, ideally with a piece of fresh bread and a glass of Žlahtina wine!
